ESTABLISHING BRIAN’S GOALS

I realized that, despite doing great work, Brian needed more customers. The best way for us to accomplish this was through investing in SEO.

I focused on three primary goals for this project.

  1. Increase his organic traffic.
  2. Increase his main keyword search rankings (primarily in Google).
  3. Increase the number of conversions (visitors to customers) from his website.

Brian was nervous, and rightfully so.  Search Engine Optimization is a sketchy world. He gets emails every day from “agencies” claiming they can help when they’ll really just destroy his website.

Google relentlessly changes its ranking algorithm to improve search results for people.

However, I know that some factors matter way more than others in SEO.

Below are the three things that I do to ensure success for our clients.

  1. Create High-Quality Content – No matter what niche the content is for or where it will be posted, these three characteristics are a must for quality content: Informative, Interesting, and Relevant.
  2. Improve Page Speed – Page speed is a direct ranking factor, a fact known even better since Google’s Algorithm Speed Update. However, speed can also affect rankings indirectly by increasing the bounce rate and reducing dwell time.
  3. Improve Meta Data – Usually, websites have meta descriptions, meta titles, and meta tags that are not optimized.

MEASURABLE RESULTS

The daily organic traffic went from around 100 per day to around 900 per day from March 2019 to March 2020.

WHAT I LEARNED ALONG THE WAY

One of the books that I’ve read again and again is The E-Myth by Michael Gerber.  In the book, Michael explains that technicians are the reason most businesses fail.  A “technician” is a person who thinks that because they’re good at a skill, they can run a business that sells that skill.

Too many online store owners assume that because they are good (or even great!) at creating a website, they can run an online business successfully.
